Description

Sharing the border with Bolivia and Chile, Acotango is the fourth highest mountain in the Western Cordillera, at 6.052 m and is within the National Park of Sajama. Its summit provides spectacular views of the Sajama Volcano and the two Payachatas. According to the calculations, this volcano erupted 1000 years ago, and the view from its summit shows its open crater, a product of an immense lateral explosion. It is believed that in ancient times, the Incas had a sanctuary above that peak, and would carry sacrifices to the summit to offer to the Pachamama.

The first ascent was made by Sergio Kunstmann and Claudio Meier on October 14, 1965, seeing on the summit remains of burned wood thus confirming that it was an altar of the Incas.

Why do we climb the Acotango?

We consider the Acotango, as “The 6000 easiest” in the world to climb. Why? In comparison to the Huayna Potosí, Acotango is less technical and can be climbed in only two days, without mountain equipment this depending on the condition of the mountain.

Technicality:

Acotango recommended for climbers without previous experience, does not have exposed walls, its route is quiet and not very long. In some months of the year you do not need to carry mountain equipment only you need warm clothing walking sticks instead of ice ax. The strong wind of the Western Cordillera can make this climbing a little more difficult.
